Light show at Mountain Top Campground

At dusk in late May and early June, our guests can marvel at the sight of lightning bugs (or fireflies) flashing on the hillsides and valleys below Mountain Top Campground. The state insect of Pennsylvania (Photuris pensylvanica) glows and blinks, hovering by the thousands just above the long grasses and in the treetops. On some evenings, the sheer number of lightning bugs looks like a carpet of twinkling Christmas lights spread over the landscape.

These insects thrive at our campground because of the large country meadow below the camping area that gives guests great views for miles in every direction.

Enjoy the beauty of nature just 25 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh!
